Random question of the day? Again!?

Why does I come before E except after C?

Random question of the day? Again!?
Because I said so. (get it?...corney I know :p)
Reply:You mean except when sounded as A as in neighbor or weigh? Life happens!
Reply:I think it was a bunch of people that got together and said, "hey, let's make spelling 20 times harder than it should be." and now we are living with the consequences. Bastards! I have enough trouble spelling already!
Reply:The full thing is "If it rhymes with B its I befor E except after C." It only appliesto english so words that arent english it wont apply to.

I think some group of guys went this is too messy we need a rule and we'll change all the spellings to fit it.
Reply:hmmm...

Reply:Because some old English dudes with fake white whigs and panty hoes(oops I mean h-o-s-e) made it up to confuse us!
Reply:Don't know - that's the English language for you :) lol
Reply:i dont know conjunction junction whats your function!
Reply:I see.
Reply:You forgot "except sometimes" ----
Reply:Our linguistics laws are ad lib with not real structure. Our language is just a bunch of sloppiness mangled together to form an a language that we THINK communicates our thoughts and feelings but ends up everyone has a different meaning for everything.
Reply:I know...and there are exceptions to that rule!! ...neither, ceiling, are 2 of them. No wonder the English language is so hard to learn!!..lol
Reply:D?
Reply:English is a Germanic language. German has many ie/ei words. In the mid 1800's Daniel Webster standardized American English with the writing of the first dictionary for America -- Webster's Dictionary. There he standardized various irregular spellings and rules (colour to color, etc....) include ie/ei spellings.
Reply:it just does for some strange reason.
Reply:who cares
Reply:It doesn't.

If it did, weird would be spelled wierd.

Isn't it I before E? In weird, it's E before I. There's no C to complain about.
