Reply:For me the bottom line is that I believe random drug testing to be a major violation of our fundamental civil liberties.
As with any other criminal investigation there should be reasonable probable cause before any such testing is done on an individual. When I say reasonable probable cause, I am talking about the same type of probable cause that is required to do a search of a persons automobile, home, or other personal space. "Because he looks like a thug" doesn't count.
As for voluntary extra curricular activities, I have less of a problem with random drug testing because, unlike basic attendance of school, one is not required to be on a sports team. If you have objections to the tests you can opt not to participate.
As for teachers, just as with any other investigation into suspected criminal activity I believe there should be probable cause before any such test is done. One could (and in fact have) argue that job related random drug testing does not violate the constitution because nobody is required to work in any given profession.
As for my consent as a parent the answer is, unless you can persuade me that there is a real reason to suspect that my child is involved in illicit activity, HELL NO!
Reply:A. Disagree vehemently. Violation of civil rights. It assumes guilt by forcing drug testing rather than only testing when given evidence a particular individual is guilty.
B. No B?
C. As part of employment, it's a different story. If there's to be drug testing, it has to start with administration and faculty, that's for sure! But even then it's a violation of civil rights, as far as I'm concerned.
D. I don't believe any random drug testing belongs in our schools.
E. I believe our existing laws should apply.
F. Because I disagree with random testing, then I don't think there would be results to report. However, if the testing were to happen anyway, then the only way to apply our laws is to inform the police. However, I don't think we have laws that punish people for testing positive to drugs.
G. Yes, I believe parents should have to consent, and I also believe no parent should consent.
H. Absolutely not. I am adamantly opposed to this presupposition of guilt implied in this type of testing.
I. As far as I'm concerned, the entire school administration works for me. I pay their salaries through taxes. And thus as a parent, I should have input in what enforcement action would be. However, I believe all students should be treated the same -- so parental approval of punishments is inappropriate.
J. My children are a little young to have an opinion.
Reply:A) I agree because it can create a cleaner environment for both students and staff
C) Possible, but students should be the main concern
D)Most schools allready apply random drug testing to sports, so yes
E)Probation, Expellshun
F)Authorities
G)YES
H)YES, becuase i wont want my kid doing drugs, so if they might be subjected to a drug test, they might not do it
I)Yes, unless the punishment is administered by the local authorities
J)Yes, they dont care.
Reply:A.Agree. Its the only language that speaks the truth to people needing good answers.
C. Agree. Its the only language that speaks the truth to people needing good answers.
D. No.
E. Zero tolerance. Expulsion from the school system.
F. Handle in house but report to local authorities for their intel.
G. Not if the parents want to be off the hook like they so often do.
H. Yes. Any help for my child would be appreciated.
I. The voice should be decided from the start as policy.
J. No. My child is too young. She is only three years old.
Make sure the test includes hair follicle testing which covers drug use from six months ago.
Reply:you forgot a B
Reply:A. Yes, because there are so many people doing drugs (people I know and don't know) and I'm tired of nobody doing anything about it.
C. I think it's only fair and will make the teens feels less objectified.
D. No, they are not the only ones doing drugs.
E. Admin-suspension from job to being fired; Student-suspension-expulsion.
F. In-house. I doubt the schools would want all the negative media, anyway.
G. Yes.
H. Yes, because parents might think they know everything that goes on in their children's lives but they are usually wrong.
I. Yes, since that is my child.
J. High school student but my opinions is that it's about time and people that test positive get what they deserve for making such a dumb mistake that could very well ruin their future.
Reply:A) Disagree. I agree with drug searches, but drug testing is a little to close to invasion of privacy. Parents should be allowed to request testing for their child and the school should perform the tests upon request.
B) I do believe that people that cannot repeat the first 3 letters of the alphabet in the proper order should be tested for drugs ;)
C) Yes. Anyone that gets paid off my taxes should be tested for drugs. Many corporations have similar drug testing requirements.
D) No.
E) Teacher first offense, fired. No chance for second offense.
Student first offense, education and support though a trained drug councilor. Second offense, legal action including community service and a criminal record. Third offense, expulsion and or jail time.
F) In-house being school? First time in-house with parental involvement, every other offense by local authorities.
G) Yes
H) Depends on the frequency and method of testing.
I) Yes, it's public building, public education, and I pay taxes.
J) No. She's not even aware of the concept as far as I know.
Reply:I actually had to write something similar several years ago for a rather nice college schlarship package, so let's see how I do:
a) yes, at least provided there is any suspicion to begin with. . . purely for the heck of it would be a waste of time and resources
c) yes. . . again, at least if there are any suspicions beyond one at the start of employment. . . being under the influence of something can make it hard to adequately do one's job. . . and there's also the issue of trying to be a role model
d) no. . . that would again sound like trying to set different rules for atheletes vs. scholars (know many are both, but bear with me) -- there already seem to be different standards even without that. . . and they'll still hurt both parties
e) definitely firing if they're illegal drugs (see part c) and at least strongly considering the same otherwise, depending on severity and substance
f) illegal. . . authorities need to know so it goes on record. . . otherwise, may be difficult for authorities due to no actual laws having been broken, but maybe note made in some national teaching database
g) tough question. . . probably have to say yes due to legal issues involved. . . but I don't think it'd truly be "random" without everyone's involvement
h) yes
i) yes, because it's ultimately the parents' responsibility instead of the school districts. . . but the school should be involved and have *real* input
j) no kids
Reply:a)Totally agree drugs are way to prevelent in schools
c) Yes faculty should be screend by the same percentage as the students
d) Screening shoud be at a greater percentage for those involved in extracurricular activities but not only to those
e) First should be warning seccond suspension with regular tests third police involved
f) Should mostly be handled in house until it is aparent that there is a major problem of addiction
g) It's pretty much neccessary to have parental consent
h) Yes I wanna know and plan on testing my kids myself
I) Deffinately it should be a cooperative aproach to better the child
J) Unfortuately not
Reply:I feel that all school officials should be drug tested. If school officials such as bus drivers are tested than all others should be as well. Teachers and/or administrators can be a alcoholic or uses some other drug and no one know unless some one reported them because of the smell or behavior. They gets away with this. In my opinion, this is not fare. Everyone should be drug tested in the Public Schools.
Reply:a)agree, It is something nessesary if someone is doing drugs they are not a welcomed part of the school
c)yes
d)no, all students should be tested
e)Zero tolerence policy should be inforced expelled or fired imediatly
F)parents, should be informed before reporting on the first offense afterward it should be reported imediatly
G)Yes, It should be part of the student handbook which must be signed and returned
H)I am a student, but of course I would provide consent, it is important that my child or who ever's child is in the safest enviorment possible, w/o any drug users.
I)No, the school will make the best choice for the child involved
J)I do not have a child, I am a Highschool Student
Reply:I am a 16 year old high school student.
A) I agree, if students are suspected of doing drugs, the school should be able to do drug testing. It would be for the health of students and schools need to keep security and order.
C) Yes, only if the school has a good reason to suspect them (admin and faculty - same with students). Otherwise this might violate their rights (4th Amendment - US).
D) Yes, since I don't see why students would use drugs for something other than sports. I wouldn't like to have drug testing when I'm in a middle of a class. If I play sports, they can test me after school during soccer practice or something.
E) If student, suspension. If faculty, I'd fire them? I dunno.
F) I think it should be In-House. I don't think it's right to make the results public, since we have a right to some privacy.
G) Yes
H) I think I would probably say Yes, I wouldn't think my child is doing drugs. If he is, I would say No, to keep it private and deal with him myself.
I) Yes
Reply:I agree....Drugs are illegal. If you dont do drugs then you shouldn't care. I dont do drugs, so test me all you want.
Reply:I think it's a good idea for random drug testing in schools.
For both teachers and students not just for sports.
And I tink their parents should not have a voice in the
punishment. My children think that it's a good idea.
